Ideas for Tattoo Designs

Deciding on what tattoo to have can be a complex decision. With so many individual designs and styles to entice you it can be difficult to decide on what to get.
Nowadays there are thousands of ideas for tattoo designs to choose from. Whether it be via an internet gallery or in person at your local tattoo parlour. Once you've made the choice on design, you need to think about the style, the colouring, the body placement, the size etc etc.
In order to in some way assist you, I've made a simple checklist of tips to follow in picking the right idea for your tattoo design.
1. What sort of art do you like?
Think about your preferences and what stokes you, if you like lots of colour and vibrancy you need to think about a style that would better suit this, Japanese artwork would be ideal whereas tribal perhaps not.
2. How visible will it be?
Think about this. Your skin ages over time. If you're outside a lot, especially in the sun, the skin weathers. Any tattoo is only as good as the skin its in so it stands to reason that a highly visible tattoo will weather, and potentially deteriorate quicker than one that is protected.
If you've decided to tattoo any area of your body that will not always be covered up you perhaps should think about a design using bolder line work and perhaps less colour. Tribal, Aztec and Polynesian tattoos are an example of this.
3. How big are you willing to go?
Big tattoos can intimidate. Especially if its your first tattoo. A lot of people go for a smaller tattoo the first time out because they are unsure if they will enjoy the experience.
The question has to be what do you really want? Some designs simply don't work on a smaller scale. Intricate designs involving a lot of colour need to be big simply to be able to see what is going on in the tattoo. If you don't want a big tattoo, either because you don't want the pain or you don't want to upset a family member, then you need to consider designs that are less complex in nature.
4. Will you want more artwork in the future?
This is something you really need to work out in advance. Tattoos in my experience can be very addictive once you have gotten past the first one. You'll get bolder and start planning bigger designs in the future only to find that the smaller first time tattoo you had is in the way or doesn't compliment the style of your other tattoos. Everyone's tastes change over time and what was cool in the eighties (when I started getting tattooed) but not be in vogue now. It can be difficult to predict but you do need to consider your longer term tattoo plans.
