Tribal Tattoo Designs: Where Do They Originate And What Do They Mean?

When making a list of some of the most popular types of tattoo design available today, tribal tattoo designs almost always come to mind. The truth is that "tribal" is a general name for broad range of different types of tattoo, all with their own unique meaning and history.
Why Do People Get Tribal Tattoos?
In the past, tribal tats were used as an identifier or a mark of loyalty to a specific tribe. However, today people often choose tribal tats as a symbol of their heritage and where they have come from. Just about anyone can get a tribal tattoo as a way of representing a certain belief, emotion or spiritual message that the tribal symbol may represent - or they may just like the way it looks.
Celtic Tattoo Designs
Some of the most popular tribal tattoo designs come in the form of Celtic symbols. There is the Celtic knot, which symbolizes the never-ending cycle between life and rebirth. This knot is often featured in a number of other Celtic tats, such as the Celtic cross.
North American Tribal Designs
There are a number of different tribal designs in existence from North American history. They often featured images of weapons.
African Tribal Tats
These kind of tribal tat designs were originally made by cutting the skin and rubbing it with ash. The scar is what created the tattoo, as it rose up above the original surface layer of the skin. These kind of designs often included bold lines across vast areas of the body.
Other Styles of Tribal Tattoo
The name "tribal tattoo" doesn't always represent a specific tribe. In many cases it simply represents abstract symbols depicted in bold black lines. These have been very popular for the last few decades and just about any tattoo parlor will hold a number of these designs for you to view.
